About the Award 

The aim of Fulbright State/Territory Scholarships is to encourage and profile research relevant to recipients’ home state/ territories; and assist in building international research links between the state and U.S. researchers and institutions. These scholarships offer the opportunity for outstanding researchers to broaden their professional, educational and cultural horizons, then return to share the experience with their local community. This award is open to postgraduate and postdoctoral applicants.

General Criteria

Award Specific Criteria

Must be an Australian citizen.  Must not be a dual citizen of the U.S.  Must be residing in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply – please see link below).  Must not have already commenced this degree or project in the U.S.  Must not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before program commences.  Must hold an undergraduate degree.

Must have a letter of invitation from proposed host institution.  Must be associated with an institution, organisation, or community in Western Australia that will benefit from the proposed Fulbright program.  Visiting student Researchers only: Must be enrolled in a PhD program at an Australian institution. Must not complete their PhD prior to completion of Fulbright program.   Postdoctoral applicants only: must have a PhD  Postdoctoral candidates only: PhD must have been conferred in the past 5 years* at the time of the application.  * Applicants may be in their final year of their PhD research if applying for a postdoctoral award. PhD must be conferred before commencing program.  Career breaks may be considered – please contact the Fulbright team via [email protected]

 

Special Application Requirements 

Must provide an award statement in the application which clearly outlines the benefit of the proposed program of research to a topic or issue relevant to the state/territory. 

 

Award Benefits 

• Monthly stipend: for the duration of the program based on the host institution location (determined by the current approved Monthly Maintenance Rate set by the U.S. Department of State). 

• International travel allowance: round-trip, economy class airfare directly to and from the awardee’s home city and the city of the host institution (capped at AUD$4,000). 

• Settling-in allowance:  

• Visiting student researchers: USD$3,193  

• Postdoctoral (4-month program): USD$2,833 (for 4-month program)  

• Postdoctoral (program over 4 months): USD$3,278  

• Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE): a limited Health Benefits Plan designed by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. Please note this plan is NOT an insurance policy. 

• Orientation and Gala: travel, accommodation, transport and meals at the Fulbright Orientation and Gala Presentation Dinner. 

• Visa: J1 visa (and J2 for traveling family members*) organized by the Fulbright program. 

• Support and Guidance: from the Commission prior to and during program. 

 

*J2 visas are contingent on eligibility, including whether or not the dependent has held a previous J1/J2 visa and duration of stay with the awardee. Only spouses and children under 21 are eligible for J2 visas.
