Fulbright Partnerships with Universities

Flinders University sponsored the Fulbright-Flinders Distinguished Chair in American Political Science. This scholarship aims to further mutual understanding between the peoples of Australia and the United States of America through educational and cultural exchange.

Kansas State University sponsors the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Agriculture and Life Sciences to support the development of key agricultural research. Kansas State University also sponsors a Fulbright Senior Scholarship in any field or discipline. The aim of the scholarship is to promote ongoing collaborations and shared knowledge between Australian researchers and K-State University.

Flinders University and Carnegie Mellon University Australia are joint sponsors of a new Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Applied Public Policy. This scholarship aims to attract outstanding American citizens to work at the sponsoring institutions, and to build capacity in skills, knowledge and capabilities in the topic object of the scholarship leading to a stronger bilateral relationship between Australia and the U.S.

The Australian National University is the sponsor of a new Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The aim of this scholarship is to promote collaborative research between faculty in Australia and the United States in the arts, humanities and social sciences at the Australian National University (ANU).

The National Centre for Cultural Competence , at the University of Sydney sponsors both the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Cultural Competence for a distinguished US senior scholar, and the Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship in Cultural Competence for an Australian postdoctoral scholar. The NCCC was specifically established within the University of Sydney to foster scholarship and research in cultural competence, an area of increasing academic interest.

Fulbright Partnerships with Government Entities

The Australian Government’s Defence, Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) , sponsors the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Advanced Science and Technology. The aim of the scholarship is to attract outstanding US researchers to work in Australia in priority areas leading to ongoing collaborative partnerships between Australia and the USA to develop skills and capabilities in emerging fields of science and technology.

Both the Australian Government and the U.S. Government sponsored the Fulbright Climate Change and Clean Energy Scholarship until 2015. This scholarship was established in 2010 to increase bi-national collaboration addressing issues around climate change.

The CSIRO sponsors the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Science, Technology & Innovation. This is a new scholarship enabling eminent U.S. scholars to undertake research with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Successful U.S. researchers will collaborate on projects with Australia’s most ambitious scientific research program, the National Research Flagships. The CSIRO has also sponsored a Fulbright Scholarship for U.S. Postgraduates in recent years.

Distinguished Chair Awardees:

The Australian Government’s Department of Education and Training sponsors the Fulbright Professional Scholarship in Vocational Education and Training. This scholarship is for professionals within the vocational education and training sector, or training leaders in business and industry. It provides for the development of specific skills and knowledge through a national training system.

Additionally, the Department of Education and Training sponsors the Fulbright-Anne Wexler Scholarship. This scholarship, established in 2009, recognises the many contributions made by the successful Washington U.S. lobbyist Mrs Anne Wexler in her role fostering Australian-American relations. The scholarship supports Mrs Wexler’s bi-national interests in the field of public policy including areas such as health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, economics, political science, history or governmental relations.

The Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) sponsors the Fulbright Professional Scholarship in Australia-United States Alliance Studies. This scholarship was established in 2001 to recognise the 50th anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) sponsors the Fulbright Scholarship in Nuclear Science and Technology. The aim of the scholarship is to support Australian Scholars to research or study in the U.S. to advance the application of nuclear science and technology in areas as diverse as materials, health, climate change, mining and engineering.

The Australian Government’s Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet sponsors the Fulbright Indigenous Scholarship. This scholarship was established to recognise indigenous leaders’ commitment to achieving excellence, while seeking an international perspective and collaboration through study and research.

Fulbright Partnerships with States and Territories and Private Entities

The Fulbright Professional Scholarship in Non-Profit Leadership is sponsored by the Origin Foundation and the Australian Scholarships Foundation, and provides an opportunity for an emerging leader in the NFP sector to undertake a program of research and/or professional development in the U.S. with an approved U.S. charitable organisation.

Fulbright State and Territory Scholarships have been established for New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, and Western Australia. These scholarships are supported by state or territory governments, companies, universities, private donors and other stakeholders. Their aim is to encourage and profile research relevant to the state, and assist the building of international research links between each state and U.S. research institutions.
